PTSD is a specific type of anxiety that develops after a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, terrorist attack, combat, or a violent personal assault. PTSD, or combat fatigue or shell shock as the condition was known during World Wars I and II, became a more prevalent psychological diagnosis during the wars as many veterans experienced its debilitating symptoms.
